The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series from Netflix has, almost predictably, caused a massive divide between fans. Some liked the changes they made to the source material while others wish the time and money had been spent on producing more animated content within the Avatar universe. If you fall into the latter group, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll soon be getting your wish as the Gaang is getting a series of Avatar: The Last Airbender movies from the creators of the original series starting in 2025.
After the original series’ creators left the Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender show in June 2020 due to “creative differences,” they didn’t walk away from the franchise completely. In February 2021, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were announced as the co-chief creative officers for the newly created Avatar Studios within Nickelodeon. Avatar Studios would be focused solely on the creation of new animated content within the Avatar universe, with three new films slated for production.
While we don’t know much about what these three movies will entail, we do that the first one will follow the adventures of an adult Aang and his friends, serving as something of a bridge between the original series and The Legend of Korra. That Avatar animated film, which still doesn’t have an official title but is scheduled to be released theatrically on October 10, 2025. We expect the film to be released on Paramount+, which hosts most other Nickelodeon properties, either at the same time or shortly after.
