NYCC 2021 | Feathered Serpents, Brujas, and Sugar Skulls: Understanding LatinX Representation in Pop Culture
Thu, Oct 7, 2021 12:45 PM - 1:45 PM Room 406.1
In the last twelve years imagery and folktales have crossed from the Latinx household into pop culture. Shows such as Breaking Bad, True Blood, and The Mayans have mesmerized audiences with references to curanderos, brujas, Santa Muerte, and feathered serpents. Panelists will share the cultural meanings behind these references and discuss how they use their Latinx culture/s as inspiration for their creative work in video game design, graphic novels, and comics. This conversation will allow attendees to understand the cultural significance of Latinx pop culture so that they may continue to build inclusive learning spaces.
Featuring, David Bowles, Elaine Gomez, Joe Sanchez, Kelly Fernandez
