Like Henry Cavill in the Netflix show, the Witcher 4 is leaving Geralt behind so Ciri can become the main character she was meant to be
The Witcher video game series is taking a page from Superman's playbook and moving on from Geralt to something new.

The dust has started to settle on one of the biggest reveals of The Game Awards 2024, which was that a new game in The Witcher series by CD Project Red was coming and that it – shockingly – wouldn’t star Geralt. Instead, the developers were bringing Ciri to the forefront of the series for the first time – something that has been in the works since before Netflix’s live-action show.
While I personally would have liked The Witcher 4 to follow a totally new protagonist (potentially in a new time period), I am excited to see how Ciri lives in a world where Geralt isn’t waiting in the wings. She can make her way in the world without the weight of her impending destiny weighing down on her. Like Henry Cavill before me, I’m ready to leave the brooding monster hunter behind for something a bit different.
Stepping out of her adoptive father’s shadow gives Ciri the chance to make her own mark on the world rather than simply reacting to what Geralt does. And, before anyone starts, there is no real lore reason why women can’t be witchers – the tabletop game even introduced the concept so why can’t the video games do the same?
This isn’t a decision that CD Projekt Red made recently, either. They apparently decided to give Ciri the spotlight immediately after finishing development on The Witcher 3, which was 9 years ago. That even predates the Netflix started production in 2017, which is a long time to keep something like this under wraps.
The bad news is that The Witcher 4 has only just entered the full production phase, which means we still have several years before we’ll get to take Ciri out into the world to hunt monsters. By that time, we’ll have gotten to see Liam Helmsworth’s take on Geralt in the fourth and possibly the fifth (and final) season of The Witcher on Netflix.
