Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders are coming back - and bringing what writer Jordie Bellaire tells us is "flying horses, family drama and friendship" in this unique twist on King Arthur and Arthurian legends.

Based on the '90s animated series of the same name (sometimes called Starla & the Jewel Riders in some countries), this new comic book rejuvenvation of the property sets it firmly in the magical girl world innovated by Sailor Moon and She-Ra but though the eyes, hands, and heart of Bellaire, artist Koi Carreon, and colorist Sarah Davidson.

"I'm really looking forward to expanding and developing the Jewel Riders further than the show had time to do along with my fantastic collaborators Koi Carreon, and Sarah Davidson!" Bellaire tells Popverse. "This work will be great for fans of the show and accessible to new readers looking for a magical girl friend group."

Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders is being published by Mad Cave Studios' YA imprint Maverick, in partnership with the cartoon's original owners 41 Entertainment. Originally conceived as an adaptation of Anne McCaffrey's the Dragonriders of Pern, writer/director Robert Mandell decided instead to pull from Arthurian legend for this revolutionary new look at Lady Gwenevere from Arthurian legend.

"I have very fond memories of watching the show with my sister when I was a child," says Carreon. "I hope the new book can inspire the kids today the same way the old tv show did for me.”

Editing this book is Lauren Hitzahusen, who told us about her personal connection to this '90s animated series: "One of my earliest childhood memories is standing in Toys R Us, holding a VHS for Princess Gwenevere & the Jewel Riders. It was a show that I instantly fell in love with– Gwenevere's perseverance, Fallon's strong leadership, and Tamara's kind heart all spoke to me as a child," says Hitzahusen. "I loved the talking animals, the glittering gemstones, and how fun and colorful the world was. It's really a dream come true for me to be able to expand the world of the Jewel Riders and tell their stories today. I'm so thrilled to be on this team and working with these talented creators to help bring this book to life."

Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders Vol. 1 goes on sale May 28, 2024. You can pre-order now on Amazon or Bookshop.
