The Rocky Horror Picture Show is more than a movie, it’s a vibe.
The 1975 rock musical has become a cult classic, inspiring midnight showings with goofy (and sexually charged) audience rituals. Attending a Rocky Horror screening is like a cross between a movie screening, a comic convention, and a burlesque show. Trust me, I’ve been to one, and it’s an experience unlike any other. Audience members shout at the screen, throw items, perform in front of the screen, and find ways to embarrass newbies.
Although the movie is 50 years old, the midnight screenings continue to bring in a small but dedicated audience. What is it about the film that has inspired such devotion?
During a panel at GalaxyCon Columbus 2024, Rocky Horror star Barry Bostwick spoke about what he believes the movie’s appeal is. “It’s sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Basically, that’s what it is. And also, I can give you all the political social reasons, which I think are wonderful, and I think it’s changed a lot of people’s lives. But I think when they go see it, you’re basically just going to a party. You’re just having a party. And you’re at a party with a bunch of weirdos. Thank God you’ve found your people, your friends, your family, and you’ve decided to all meet at a Rocky Horror Picture Show evening, and I think it’s wonderful. So, keep coming.”
Having been to one of the midnight screenings myself, I can say that Bostwick is right, it’s a party. It’s been 50 years since the film’s release, and the party has shown no signs of slowing down. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
