It is a journey that started with Margaret Atwood’s 1985 book and has become one of the most influential and thought-provoking television experiences of the last decade. The Handmaid’s Tale is set to return for its sixth and final season, but when will we finally see the end of June’s story? We have news.
Filming has begun on The Handmaid's Tale season 6, with nothing less than a picture of series star Elizabeth Moss sharing a set-photo with her - revealing she'll also be directing the the first episode. In that is news that she and Hulu aim to have The Handmaid's Tale season 1 debut in "spring 2025" - which would mean anytime from January to June 2025.
The final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, like most of Hollywood, was severely disrupted by the actor and writer’s strikes of 2023. Filming was meant to begin in August of that year, but that obviously didn’t happen as planned. Earlier this year, star/producer Elizabeth Moss mentioned on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that they were hoping to resume filming this summer - which September qualifies for (depending on where you live).
Not only does The Handmaid's Tale season 6 need to give a satisfactory ending to June’s epic story of rebellion, but it also needs to help set up the upcoming spin-off series, The Testaments. That is a tall order for a single season of television but The Handmaid’s Tale has proven capable of delivering big stories balanced with intimate, emotional moments since its first season debuted in 2017. Star Elisabeth Moss was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in season five, so we're exicted to see how she tops that when the show finally makes its return.
We’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, with a spring 2025 release window.
