It’s been a long journey for Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When we first met the God of Mischief in Thor (2011), he was a scheming trickster trying to steal the throne. Flash-forward to 2023, where Loki season 2 ends with the character saving the timeline and taking his place at the End of Time. This emotional moment weighed heavily on Tom Hiddleston as he filmed the pivotal scene. What was Loki thinking during this crucial moment, and how did Tom Hiddleston prepare for it?
Hiddleston shared his experiences filming the Loki finale during a spotlight panel at Megacon 2024.
"[Directors] Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead] turned to me, and we were doing Loki walking up the steps with the timelines in his hands, moving towards him sitting in the chair, and what that would mean. Justin and Aaron turned to me and said, ‘I think we’re going to be in here,’” Tom recalled, making a small square around his head. According to Tom, the directors then asked him how they could help him prepare for the shot.
“It makes me think of the 15 years of playing this character. Aaron said, ‘Why don’t you go away, because the energy of the set is very practical. So just go and take a minute, and why don’t you watch some of the scenes from the last 15 years.’ It was a brilliant note. It was so clever. It made me reflect on the friendships I made in this journey, the people I’ve met, the laughter we’ve shared, and the lessons I’ve learned personally,” Hiddleston recalled.
“By the time I came back in to shoot the scene, I was carrying all of those memories with me. And it felt really fresh and very resonant. It all came from Justin and Aaron’s suggestion to do that. That last shot is me thinking of all those people I’ve shared this journey with, which is who he is talking about in the end when he says, ‘For you, for all of us’”
The next time you rewatch Loki season 2, look at the melancholy in Hiddleston’s eyes. We don’t know if this is the end of Hiddleston’s journey with Loki, but if it is, what a wonderful way to bring things full circle.
