How long do you think it takes to learn an entirely new accent? Probably a couple of months of practice, especially if you were going to use said accent to, say, be in a major television production for both the BBC and Netflix, right? Unfortunately, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder star Emma Myers didn’t have that kind of time – she had to perfect her English accent in a matter of weeks.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Wednesday star revealed that she only had two weeks to learn the English accent her character Pip has in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which nearly put her off taking the role in the first place. “I was very hesitant to take the role because the time from signing on to starting to film was only two weeks. And I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know how well I can pull off a British accent with only two weeks of dialect sessions.’”
How did she manage to pull it off? Myers says it was a team effort. In addition to her dialect coach, she says the rest of the crew helped keep her accent from wandering. “Also, I had an all-English crew and cast. So I told everybody like, ‘It’s not gonna hurt my feelings if I say something wrong and you want to correct me. Please correct me!’ So, I had people looking out for me in that way as well, which was good. I needed that.”
Though the experience was “a bit daunting,” the effort has clearly paid off – A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is currently the most popular show on Netflix following its warm reception on the BBC earlier this year. We didn’t spot any problems with Emma Myers’ accent, so having everyone helping her out seems to have worked.
The other star of Netflix's hit series Wednesday, Emma Myers, is stepping out on her own with the BBC/Netflix adaptation of a Good Girl's Guide to Murder.
