If you're a fan of a little demon dude named Mephisto in Marvel Comics, your time is coming. (Okay, maybe he's not that little.) After years of being alluded to in the MCU without ever being outright named, Mephisto has finally been directly mentioned in an episode of Agatha All Along. In episode 3, "Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials," Jennifer Kale wonders if the character Teen is an "agent of Mephisto." It's fitting that the demon's name was dropped first in a dark and spooky show involving witches and magic. That said, it was a decision that was made from beyond showrunner Jac Schaeffer's purview.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Schaeffer said that the decision to mention Mephisto came about from "a conversation with executive producer Mary Livanos, Brad [Winderbaum], and Kevin [Feige]." Schaeffer noted that the reference to Mephisto was "larger than [her] and this show" and is part of "the larger Marvel-ness of it."
Schaeffer created WandaVision, a show that had fans speculating that Mephisto was behind the idyllic life that Wanda Maximoff lived in. Fans also suspected that Mephisto would appear in the aftermath of Spider-Man: No Way Home, since the film's ending recalls elements of the notorious comic book storyline, "One More Day."
The MCU has a track record of seeding references to characters before they properly appear onscreen. Captain America: The Winter Soldier features a throwaway line that directly mentions "Dr. Stephen Strange," for instance. Given what Schaeffer has said about what went into mentioning Mephisto on Agatha All Along, it's clear that Marvel Studios has plans for Mephisto. The only question now is when they're finally going to release the demon.
