If there’s one thing the Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven, it’s that no project will ever completely fade away. We’ve seen Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire suit up as Spider-Man again. Daredevil has been rescued from cancellation and will be getting a sequel series called Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. The series will also feature the return of Jon Bernthal as the Punisher. Plus, the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine featured a lot of returning characters, including Jennifer Garner’s Elektra and Wesley Snipes’ Blade.
No Marvel project is ever truly dead….except for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show.
Speaking to a crowd at Osaka Comic Con, Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski was asked about the possibility of an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. revival. While Cebulski spoke highly of the show, he wasn’t optimistic about it making a return. “The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a very great show. A beloved show. But right now, there are no plans to continue just yet,” Cebulski said.
In 2023 DK published the book Marvel Studios – The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline. The sourcebook, published in coordination with Marvel Studios, featured an introduction by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige which seemed to push Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Marvel Netflix shows out of continuity.
Marvel Studios later reversed course, restoring Daredevil and the Marvel Netflix shows back to canon. The shows were even placed on Disney+’s official MCU timeline. However, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D continues to be in continuity exile.
Of course, we are in the midst of the Multiverse Saga. You never know who could show up or when. While Cebulski says there aren’t any plans for a AOS revival, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of Coulson and the gang.
