Freevee, the Amazon streaming service that let audiences watch whatever they wanted with no need for a subscription, is being shuttered by the company — but that doesn’t mean that Amazon is abandoning free streaming content.
The platform, which launched in 2019 as IMDb Freedive before being rebranded to Amazon Freevee in 2022, has been available as both a service for Prime Video subscribers and a standalone service for years; as a result of Amazon’s decision, all Freevee content will be folded into Prime Video moving forward and remain available for free with ads. The update will be rolled out across upcoming weeks in the four territories Freevee had previously been active: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria. The Freevee brand will be retired although as a result of the move.
Freevee has long been a low-key but important part of Amazon’s video offerings, with a number of original shows available through the service, including Bosch: Legacy, Judy Justice, Australian soap Neighbours, and the critically acclaimed Jury Duty.
An Amazon spokesperson told Deadline, who initially reported the news, “To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels – all available on Prime Video.”
Does this mean we can get a second Jury Duty season soon? Maybe?
