Star Wars: Andor season 2 will reveal more about Stellan Skarsgård's Luthen Rael, and recast him as... a start-up guy stressed about his public launch
Andor creator Tony Gilroy sheds light on what's ahead for Stellan Skarsgård's Star Wars character, Luthen Rael, and his nascent rebellion

A tough road lies ahead for Stellan Skarsgård's Andor character, Luthen Rael. As if resisting the machinations of the Empire wasn't stressful enough, the guy has to step into a role that's completely different from what he signed up for. But as Luthen addressed in that great monologue from season 1 of Andor, there's a lot that he must sacrifice for the Rebellion.
In a recent conversation with StarWars.com, the showrunner of Andor, Tony Gilroy, revealed that there's much to come for Skarsgård's character in the second and final season of the show. "We'll learn a lot about Luthen and who he was before, but we'll also... see a guy who built a start-up company in his garage, and [with] Aldhani he goes public, and it's going to be the stress of how do you take your little revolution and all the work you've done for 15 years, how do you go public with that and how do you go large? So, we're going to watch him under a great deal of stress," Gilroy said.
A great deal of stress, indeed. Thus far, the trailers for Andor season 2 haven't been shy about how the show will lead directly into the events of the 2016 film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with the development of the Death Star and all. It's difficult to imagine that Luthen would continue to act within the shadows as the stakes get more and more dire.
It's also worth noting that Skarsgård's Luthen stands in contrast to Mon Mothma, who has had to find a way to support the Rebellion while maintaining an innocuous public persona as a politician. For Mothma, she's never had the option to not "go public" with her ideals. For her, it's more been about who she aligns herself with, and who she can trust.
In any event, all will be revealed once Andor season 2 begins streaming on Disney+ on April 22, 2025.
