How far can a character go before they’ve passed the point of no return? Some fictional characters are capable of redemption, while others are too far gone. If you’ve seen The Boys, then you know that there isn’t much redemption on that show. Amazon Studios’ dark comedy is full of superheroes who do rotten things. A-Train might be a member of the Seven, but he feels more like a villain than a hero. The speedster has smuggled drugs, committed petty theft, kidnapped people, and committed murder.
Everyone loves a good redemption story, but is that where A-Train’s story arc is going? During a panel at Florida Supercon, the cast of The Boys were asked if A-Train is redeemable. The subsequent debate was interesting. “I really love A-Train’s arc. He did murder a bunch of people, but he apologized to Hughie. That’s a big win,” Karen Fukuhara said. “Saying sorry means a lot,” A-Train actor Jessie T. Usher sarcastically added.
“I just think that is what is so interesting about our show. The darkest of our characters can be good at times,” Fukuhara said. “A-Train needs a mentor. Don’t you think A-Train needs Mother’s Milk to mentor him? A-Train needs a little MM in his life,” Laz Alonso offered.
Usher asked the audience if they thought A-Train could be redeemed. To his surprise, a majority of the crowd cheered. “Let’s think about it for a second though,” Usher cautioned. “He dragged his own girlfriend down to South America to kill her in secrecy. Then came back and acted like nothing ever happened.”
This recap began to sway Fukuhara. “Oh, I forgot about that,” she said. “He knew she was a drug addict and he overdosed her on purpose. He planned this out. It was premeditated. Is that really redeemable,” Usher asked.
When you lay the evidence out that way, it’s hard to dispute. However, A-Train’s journey isn’t over yet. The Boys season 4 debuts June 13.
