Announced today on Netflix's official platforms is the casting of Yerin Ha, who will portray the character of Sophie Baek in Bridgerton season 4. The streamer has released a teaser to go along with the casting, which you can watch here:
But just who is this mysterious new character? Let's go over what we know so far.
According to the press release sent out by Netflix along with the casting announcement, Sophie is a former maid who "always finds a way to persevere through her circumstances." She disguises herself to attend Violet Bridgerton's masquerade ball, where she meets (and presumably steals the heart of) Benedict Bridgerton.
Speaking to Netflix's Tudum, Yerin Ha said that her character "immediately has obstacles — something that she constantly has to overcome [...] Whether it’s this battle around social status or trying to hide her feelings from Benedict.” Ha went on to speak about her character's depiction in the Bridgerton novels by Julia Quinn, in which Sophie has the last name "Beckett."
“A name is the first bit of identity that you share with the world, and that’s why changing a name can be so powerful,” says the actress, who will appear in HBO's upcoming Dune: Prophecy, “To make Sophie’s name fit someone who looks like me is really empowering. All credit to Jess Brownell, our showrunner.”
Ha herself was consulted on the name change, which the creatives wanted to keep as starting with the letter B. “It’s a really nice way for me to feel like the role is fit for me, rather than me having to fit a certain mold,” Ha concludes. “It’s amazing what it can do just in a psychological sense."
Bridgerton season 4 is expected some time in 2026.
