The Expanse returns as a record-breaking crowdfunded comic book, with oversight from creator James S.A. Corey

In its first day, The Expanse: A Little Death raised almost eight times its original target

BOOM! Studios’ Kickstarter campaign for a new comic book series continuing Prime Video’s cult sci-fi series The Expanse has set a new record for the publisher, underscoring not just the fanbase’s desire for more from the Rocinante crew and those around them, but also the power of celebrity when it comes to crowdfunding — after all, the new comic book series is co-written by the actor who played Amos Burton on the show, and features creative input from James S.A. Corey, the pseudonymous author who wrote the original books the series was based on.

In its first day, The Expanse: A Little Death raised $394,590 on Kickstarter — almost eight times the campaign’s stated goal of $50,000. In doing so, the in-canon sequel to the television series — written by Burton and Andy Diggle, with art from Francesco Pisa — set a new record as Boom! Studios’ biggest Kickstarter launch of all time… dethroning the previous Kickstarter launch for an Expanse project, 2023’s The Expanse: Dragon’s Tooth.

“BOOM! has become synonymous with success and excellence in the Kickstarter space and has helped bring more attention to the creators, brands, and formats we love,” Bryce Carlson, BOOM!’s deputy publisher, said in a statement. “With the success of 2023’s Dragon Tooth campaign, we had high hopes for this one. And then the incredibly enthusiastic and dedicated fans of The Expanse came and blew our expectations out of the water with their Day One support! We’re looking forward to seeing where the next 29 days take us and I can’t wait for everyone to see what Andy, Wes, Francesco, and the team have in store with this amazing new chapter in the franchise.”

The four-issue A Little Death is being created with direct supervision from Corey — in reality, the writing duo of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who have been collaborating under the name since 2011 — making it the first Corey work on The Expanse since 2022’s novella The Sins of Our Fathers. That involvement, and the fact that the series is specifically an in-canon expansion of the television series, which also ended in 2022, means that this is undoubtedly, irrefutably the first official “new” Expanse in some time… which no doubt explains that impressive first day total.

The campaign continues through May 2. More details can be found here.
