After Creature Commandos season 1, here's what's next for DC Studios, James Gunn's DCU, and Task Force M
The first project in the new DCU is over, and what have we learned? Well, for one thing, the DCU is bigger than we thought (And maybe deadlier, too)

Hail and farewell to DC’s Creature Commandos, who finish their first season today — the show was renewed for a second last month — having saved the world, but not without cost. As the first project of the new DCU comes to a close, it’s worth looking back at what’s happened in order to look ahead at the DC Studios slate for the rest of 2025 and beyond.
Spoilers for Creature Commandos season 1 follow — including episode 7, ‘A Very Funny Monster’ — so read on only if you’re ready to be spoiled. You have been warned!
Task Force M may be deadlier than the Suicide Squad
Not everyone made it out of the show’s first season alive: GI Robot and Nina Mazursky both died in the line of duty during this season — with Nina dying in the finale, alongside Princess Ilana Rostovic… although that last one is probably a good thing, in that she may or may not have been about to start World War III had she lived if Circe is to be believed. (Let’s assume that she’s probably not, but you never can tell.) Of those deaths, Nina’s is likely the one that hits the hardest, as she’d been the unlikely heart of the team throughout the entire season, and the only person who seemed able to break through the shell of The Bride*. It was only in the penultimate episode that the Bride was grudgingly coming around to the idea that she had a friend after all, having again risked her life (and the operation) to save Nina’s bacon. What will Task Force M become without Nina’s influence?
Well, that’s what the second season is for, assumedly.
(* Personally, I’m arguably still not over the death of GI Robot back midway through the season, but… he’s a robot. Surely he can be rebuilt if necessary?)
Even before Superman, the DCU is already filled with wonder and weirdness
Creature Commandos is just the first project in the new DCU era, which reboots all previous DC movies and cinematic canon into one consistent shared universe, a la the MCU. (With some exceptions; Matt Reeves’ The Batman and the animated Harley Quinn series, for example, continue unrelated to everything else around them, under the unofficial ‘Elseworlds’ banner.) Yet, Creature Commandos purposefully didn’t feel like a first chapter, or an origin story. Instead, certain elements were already in place — that Batman cameo in episode 6! — with flashbacks building out the backstory of the universe in unexpected ways, such as the appearances of both Sgt. Rock and Doc Magnus, creator of the Metal Men, in episode 4.
What this means in practice is that the DCU already feels surprisingly fully-formed, even before the first movie — July’s Superman — hits theaters. For a universe that’s just getting out of the starting blocks almost two decades after Marvel, it already feels as full, and as vibrant. Quite a feat for a seven episode animated series.
What does the future hold for the Creature Commandos?
It’s already known that Rick Flag Snr. will show up in the second season of Peacemaker, and Amanda Waller is not one to keep herself to herself when faced with anything she might consider a potential threat — which means a Superman cameo is not out of the question. For that matter, Clayface is getting his own movie after his appearance in the season’s fifth episode, which raises the question… could other Creature Commandos end up appearing in future DCU projects before the second season of the show? Or, for that matter, could characters from other DCU projects show up in Creature Commandos season 2? Metamorpho, who debuts in Superman this summer, might be a perfect fit for the team, we’re just saying…
Creature Commandos season 1 is streaming in its entirety on Max. Superman will fly into theaters July 11.
