Star Wars: The Phantom Menace's villain returns yet again in Maul: Shadow Lord animated series

The one-time Darth will return one more time in the new animated series sometime in 2026

You really, really can’t keep a good Sith down — even if you cut him in half. Just announced at the Lucasfilm Animation’s 20th Anniversary panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan, a new animated series coming to Disney+ — Maul: Shadow Lord.

Revealed via a trailer that played at the end of the panel, the announcement was underscored by a surprise appearance by Sam Witwer, who provided the voice for the character in his Star Wars: The Clone Wars appearances.

The series continues the surprise afterlife for the one-time Darth Maul, who debuted and was seemingly killed in 1999’s Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. He would later reappear in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, and Solo: A Star Wars Story, in addition to further appearances in comic book and novel form.

Beyond the brief teaser, no further details about the series — such as plot, episode count, or even release date — were announced, although the show is expected in 2026.
