DC Studios' James Gunn calls Creature Commandos a better experience for him than any of his Marvel Studios work - including Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers

James Gunn had more fun making Creature Commandos than he did making any of his Marvel films.

James Gunn has plenty to be proud of. Before he became the co-president of DC Studios, the director was responsible for fan favorite projects like Peacemaker, The Suicide Squad, and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. However, his best directing experience was a project that hasn’t been released yet.

Creature Commandos is an upcoming animated series set to premiere on Max this December. The series follows a group of monsters and freaks assembled by Amanda Waller. This animated series will be the first official project set in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. It also happens to be the most enjoyable experience he’s ever had on a project. During a Creature Commandos spotlight panel at New York City Comic Con, Gunn opened up about what the project meant for him personally.

“This has been a really interesting experience. I got the first finished episode back. It’s been a long process, because it takes a long time. I wrote the episodes, I got the cast, we directed the cast, they were all fantastic, they start with animatics, they go through that, a few drafts of that, and it keeps changing and changing.”

“I got the first episode back, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay. I think this is going to be okay.’ Let me just preface this by saying I started out as a screenwriter. Working with directors is really hard, because you never have it as good as you imagined it in your brain, which is one of the reasons I started working as a director. And I’m not the director. I directed the voice actors, but not the animation.”

“The first episode was good, then the second episode I was like, ‘Oh shoot, wow this is really good.’ Then it got to the fourth episode, and I’m like, ‘This is the best experience I’ve ever had with a director who wasn’t myself.’ Then episode seven came about, and I’m like, ‘This is better than myself. This is the best experience I’ve ever had on any project I’ve ever worked on, including Guardians, including the Avengers movies, including anything. I just have been so proud. Everybody has come together in such a perfect way.”

Creature Commandos premieres on Max on December 5, 2024.
