James Gunn warns us that DC's Creature Commandos episode 4 is the saddest thing he’s ever written, and that's saying something

Yes, that includes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

With James Gunn making the jump to DC after directing some of the most memorable MCU films, fans are eager to see if his penchant for crafting witty dialogue and heartfelt moments would carry over. However, the director warns fans that, in the upcoming Creature Commandos series, James Gunn is aiming directly at our feels.

If there’s one thing James Gunn is good at, it’s heartbreaking storytelling. We all remember how Yondu’s death broke our hearts in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol .2. Just when we thought our emotions were safe, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 gave a full assault on our feelings when we saw Rocket’s origin story.

Like I said, James Gunn knows how to make us cry, but we haven’t seen anything yet. According to the director, his upcoming DC Studios project Creature Commandos will bring us new levels of heartbreak. During the Creature Commandos spotlight panel at New York City Comic Con, Gunn warned fans that one particular episode might need some extra tissues.

“I remember writing one of the episodes. I don’t know if I should say which one..…episode four. I won’t say who it’s about. I was in Colorado with my wife Jen [Holland], and I walked into the kitchen, and I was like, ‘I think this is the saddest thing I’ve ever written in my entire life. It is really heartbreaking.’ I could feel it in my bones how sad it was. It also happened to be the episode that I was the most insane about getting right,” Gunn said.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and I cried my eyes out. The fact that Gunn believes this is more heartbreaking has me concerned. Prepare your emotions, because Creature Commandos episode 4 is going to be intense.

Creature Commandos premieres on Max on December 5, 2024.
