To cast the elvish Canaries in Delicious in Dungeon season 1, the director had the actors read dialogue from season 2

It was a creative way to find the right actors for some of Delicious in Dungeon season 2's most interesting characters.

Because most anime don’t know if they’re going to get a second season, setting things up for future seasons is a risky game. For a show like Delicious in Dungeon, which lays the groundwork for future adventures, some characters are only in a few scenes in season one but have a much bigger role in season two and beyond. How did the director get around this little problem when casting the elves in Delicious in Dungeon season one? Pull some dialogue from next season instead.

The elven Canaries only show up briefly in season one of Delicious in Dungeon and some only have a few lines. However, the studio still needed to find a voice actor to read those lines and to play the characters in the eventual second season of the Netflix anime. According to the director, they had the actors read dialogue that hasn’t been shown yet to figure out who was right for the role.

“There are still characters among the Canaries who have only spoken a word or two,” explains series director Yoshihiro Miyajima in a recent interview. “We held a proper audition for each of them in which we had voice actors read lines from later scenes, so if there was no season two, then they probably would have been like, ‘What was that all about?’ I’m really glad we got a second season.”

We’re also excited for Delicious in Dungeon season two, which Trigger had apparently known they were going to do long before they officially announced it. Not only will we get to see how the end of the manga plays out in animation but we’ll also get to see the Canaries reading the lines from their audition.
