The Year-End Film & TV Report for 2024 from data company Luminate is out now, and in it are mostly the numbers you'd expect from major franchises like House of the Dragon, Squid Game, etc.. But when it comes to Disney+, readers may be surprised to learn that the most-watched series didn't come from either Star Wars or Marvel, but a different kind of titan altogether. According to Luminate, the most-watched series on Disney+ in 2024 was Percy Jackson and the Olympians. 

As you might imagine, topping both the House of Ideas and the Galaxy Far, Far Away requires an obscene amount of viewers for your TV series, and that's exactly what Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the adaptation of the Rick Riordan book series of the same name, accomplished. Luminate estimates the viewership of Percy Jackson at a whopping 3 billion minutes watched for 2024 alone. 

Obviously, that's spread out across millions of viewers watching at the same time, but let's quickly put that number in perspective: for a single person to have watched that amount of Percy Jackson, they'd view it, on repeat and without a break, for roughly 5,704 years. In order to enter 2024 with those numbers racked up, you'd have to start in the year 3,680 BCE, which, fun fact, predates the earliest recorded Greek myth by almost 3,000 years.

Take that, Harry Potter. (And all this from a show that was actually released in 2023!)

Impressive as those numbers are, we have to keep in mind that Percy Jackson didn't conquer Marvel or Star Wars's numbers in total, because over the course of last year, several projects in both categories were released. In fact, despite topping it, Percy Jackson is the only non-Star Wars or Marvel project to make Luminate's Top 10 most-watched on Disney+ of 2024, with not one, but two seasons of The Mandalorian taking up the #9 and #10 spot, respectively. 

Still, we'll celebrate the massive win that this is for Percy Jackson as we eagerly await season 2. Which, by the way, is set to be released on Disney+ some time in 2025. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got 1,027 years of Castlevania: Nocturne, season 2 to watch.
