Dune: Prophecy showrunner says spice is still the "key to the universe" even 10,000 years in the past

With interstellar travel on the line, of course everyone wants to get their hands on spice in Dune: Prophecy.

Some things never change, even in the far reaches of space. Sandworms are terrifying and cool, power corrupts even the most well-intentioned individuals, and, of course, the spice must flow. In fact, spice has been the center of the Dune universe for thousands of years, as shown by the fact that it is still a key point of HBO’s Dune: Prophecy series.

Discussing the show’s upcoming release at New York Comic Con 2024, Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker assured fans that even though it is set 10,000 years before the events of the Dune films, “Spice is still the key to the universe.” And why wouldn’t it be? Beyond its psychotropic effects and ability to help the rich live longer, it is what keeps interstellar travel going in the Dune universe. Without it, the entire economy of the setting collapses.

Because spice still plays a key role in Dune: Prophecy, Schapker made sure to mention that the new show will feature some “incredible spaceships” when the show makes its way to our screens on November 17, 2024. In fact, setting the show 10000 years before the events we’ve seen in Dune means that we get to see the universe at a particularly important time. Humanity has just won its war against the thinking machines and has to adjust how it uses things like computers and other technology. Most importantly, Dune: Prophecy is about the establishment of the Bene Gesserit and the formation of their long-term plans for the universe.

Dune: Prophecy, and the spice that flows with it, debuts on HBO and Max November 17, 2024.
