Grey’s Anatomy is a show with a lot of differing themes (the power of found family being one of the major ones), but one of the central throughlines of the show is resilience, according to actor Caterina Scorsone, who plays Amelia Shepherd on the series. At D23's Grey's Anatomy panel, the show's cast was asked what quotes fans will bring up when they run into the actors in real life.
Scorsone shared, “I think the ones that people often talk about with Amelia is 'Only freaking superheroes' and 'Life will out.' Those ones are particularly meaningful for me, because they represent a lot of what we’re doing on the show, which is just showing resilience." Scorsone continued, "I think for all of us who went through the pandemic, and our industry’s been through the strike, and that’s rippled out through so many industries in California… we’re constantly in a state of deconstruction and reconstruction, and 'Life will out' is about a tenacity of spirit that is unstoppable. We’re gonna keep finding a way and just being a human is superheroism."
In fact, Scorsone argued, it is this regular human superheroism that brings people to the show. Scorsone said, "We show these massive surgeries that are very dramatic, but I think [the reason] so many of the audience members resonate with it is because they’re on their own superhero journeys. Having these cataclysms and then rebuilding their lives over and over again. That is one of the things that makes our show so relatable."
Grey's Anatomy Season 21 premieres September 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
