Ryan Murphy's Grotesquerie trailer is here, and it's perfect for American Horror Story: Asylum fans
Gore-obsessed killers? Untrustworthy nuns? One or two seriously sixties haircuts? The Grotesquerie trailer knows its audience, and we're betting Ryan Murphy does too

Come on, we all knew American Horror Story fans were already going to watch Grotesquere. It's a Ryan Murphy/FX joint, after all, we knew the vibes would be similar to America's favorite horror anthology series even when we knew next to nothing about the plot. But now, we've gotten a taste of the series thanks to a brand new Grotesquerie trailer released by FX, and we gotta say - it's about as Asylum-coded as you can get. Check it out to see what we mean.
In case you didn't know, Asylum is the second season of FX's American Horror Story anthology. Set in the 1960s, the series is about a reporter that infiltrates a mental asylum that is a.) run by a convent of suspicious nuns and b.) being stalked by a bloody killer. And if that sounds like a kind of blended up version of the trailer you just watched, you're right! Religious undertones, brutal slayings, and even a 60s-inspired costume design are all present in the video above.
That's not to say that Grotesquerie is ripping off its Murphy-created predecessor, or that fans that want something different from AHS fare will be totally disappointed. Arguably, there's a pretty wide gap between story details of the two shows, though you can read FX's official plot synopsis and decide that for yourself:
"In FX’s Grotesquerie, a series of heinous crimes have unsettled a small community. Detective Lois Tryon feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone—or something—is taunting her. With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of Sister Megan. However, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers"
Sure, sinister webs, small community, and an investigator being personally targeted are kind of from the Asylum playbook as well, though you must admit that those are pretty broad similarities. But then again, we're not ruling out the possibility that Ryan Murphy may shock us with the reveal that Grotesquerie is some sort of spinoff from his anthology's second season.
After a decade plus of making horror TV, the guy's got a knack for surprises.
Grotesquerie premieres on FX September 25.
