Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy reflect on the legacy of Hannibal and what the show means to them a decade later

Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen knew Hannibal was a good series when they were making it, but they had no idea it would be so beloved a decade after it ended

It’s been 10 years since NBC aired the last episode of Hannibal, and the psychological horror-thriller is still beloved. The self-proclaimed ‘Fannibals’ fanbase have passionately kept the series alive with their lively discussions, cosplay, fanart, and more.

How do series leads Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy view the series a decade later?

“The fact that 10 years later it’s like this is incredible,” Dancy says during the duo's Hannibal reunion panel on the Emerald City Comic Con 2025 Main Stage powered by Xfinity..

For Mads, it was hard to step back and really appreciate things at the time, because he was so busy making the series. Now he can see just how special it was. “When you’re in the midst of something, you’re just diving in there, and you’re living in the present, and it can be hard work, or really hard work, which this turned out to be for a lot of reasons. Later on, seeing how it’s been growing on people makes us feel really proud. We just lived in the moment, and then it turned out to be this 10 years later. It makes us smile a bit,” Mikkelsen says.

“I reflect much more on that time we were all working together than I do thinking about the character, or would I do it differently, or what does it mean now,” Dancy says. “It’s more that it has been democratized and kind of shared with many people, and it’s kind of out there. It comes back to us in different forms. Like, okay, that’s what you took from it. Great, or maybe not, or whatever it might be. I don’t know about you, but I don’t stop and think, oh, it feels so differently to me now.”
