Hannibal’s Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy were unaware of the show’s Fannibals fanbase while the show was airing

Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen didn’t realize just how popular Hannibal was

When you’re in the eye of the hurricane, it’s hard to get a sense of what’s going on outside of your immediate circle. This was the case for Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy when they starred on the television series Hannibal. Although the show struggled with ratings, the viewers who watched it were passionate. The viewers, dubbing themselves the Fannibals, discussed the series online, made fan videos, and dissected every scene between Mikkelsen’s Hannibal Lecter and Dancy’s Will Graham.

Dancy and Mikkelsen had no idea.

“It’s taken on a life of its own,” Dancy notes during the Hannibal panel at Emerald City Comic Con 2025 this weekend. “Somebody asked me today a question about whether there’s anything I thought that everybody had got wrong. But it’s not mine anymore. It’s kind of out there. That’s an amazing feeling. That’s unusual.”

Mikkelsen believes he missed most of the original hoopla because he barely went online.

“I don’t believe I was online 10 years ago, so I had no idea. I think it was after the first couple of seasons when we did a panel, and we realized that the Fannibals existed,” Mikkelsen says.

“We thought it was like four people,” Dancy adds.

“We went to Japan, and it was Japanese Fannibals, and so on,” Mikkelsen continues. “It’s just been growing and growing since then. It’s just amazing to see that. As you said, it has a life of its own.”
