Mads Mikkelsen had many memorable moments during Hannibal’s 39-episode run, but there’s one episode that stands out for him. The season 2 finale, titled ‘Mizumono,’ sees Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham prepare to run away together, but Graham betrays Hannibal. Naturally, Lecter is still able to make a getaway, and there’s some bloodshed in the process, but his relationship with Will is never the same.

“We do like the ending of season 2,” Hannibal Lecter actor Mads Mikkelsen says during the Hannibal reunion panel on the Emerald City Comic Con 2025 Main Stage powered by Xfinity. “It’s brutal, it’s heartbreaking, it was physically really challenging for all of us, and we kept shooting the entire night to get this in the can. When Hannibal is cleaning up emotionally and physically. It stands out for us as something very special.”

Watching the episode, Mikkelsen really sold Lecter’s heartbreak. The relationship between Hannibal and Graham was always complicated, and season 2 really raised the stakes, taking the series into uncharted territory for the third and final season.
