Hannibal’s Hugh Dancy once let showrunner Bryan Fuller petsit for his dog – who he promptly photographed in the oven

No dogs were harmed in the making of this article

When you’re a showrunner, you have tons of responsibilities. Sometimes that includes petsitting for the show’s cast, but some might argue that this is a perk rather than a responsibility. During a production break from Hannibal, Will Graham actor Hugh Dancy needed someone to watch his dog, and that’s when showrunner Bryan Fuller stepped in.

“I once left my dog with Bryan when we were filming in Toronto,” Dancy recalls during the Hannibal reunion panel at Emerald City Comic Con 2025. “My wife and I both had to leave for the weekend or something. We had our dog with us, and I said to Bryan, who I knew loves dogs, as you can probably guess from the show. His dog was back in LA, and he was missing him, so I said, ‘Would you want to look after him.’ And he said, ‘Yes, please.’”

Of course, this was Bryan Fuller, so things had to get a bit macabre. “He took the dog and went off to whatever we were doing, and about 8 hours later, I got a photo, which was just Bryan putting our dog in the oven [laughs],’” Dancy says.

Maybe Fuller just wanted to show the dog what it was like to stage a scene?
