When you’re mapping out a prequel to one of the most successful television shows of all time, it is important to have an ending in mind. That is probably why the showrunner for House of the Dragon has confirmed that the series, which just concluded its second season broadcast, will probably end after its fourth season.
During a virtual press conference following the season two finale of House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal faced a flurry of questions about the show – both about its current season about its potential future. When asked if House of the Dragon would continue to five seasons, Condal replied, “No, I think it's four,” before explaining that the story was mapped out following the first season. The focus of the show’s crew right now is on the upcoming third season, which is expected to go into production early next year and will consist of eight episodes.
The show’s second season proved a bit controversial among fans – it seems that House of the Dragon season two was largely aimed at setting up the future seasons. The final episode stopped short of showing The Battle of the Gullet, one of the major events of the Fire and Blood novel the show is based on. Knowing that House of the Dragon will be continuing for two more seasons gives that decision a bit more context – with two more seasons on the way, pushing a big battle back to the third season makes more sense.
House of the Dragon season two is currently streaming on Max. Season three is expected to go into production early in 2025.
