Potential spoilers for Invincible season 3.
It hasn't even been a week since the Invincible season 3 finale aired on Amazon's Prime Video, but fans are already rabidly theorizing about what season 4 might hold. To be fair; it's not entirely our fault. Invincible's creator Robert Kirkman recently dropped a bomb that has us salivating for more info, revealing that comic character Thragg has been cast... but not going so far as to reveal who will fill the role.
Infuriating, isn't it? We certainly think so, but there's something that may scratch that informational itch you're feeling. See, all the way back in 2023, Robert Kirkman made another mysterious comment about casting in Invincible, and we can't help but wonder if the two statements are related.
Let's rewind for a moment - the most recent comments that Kirkman made regarding Thragg's casting came from his March 13 interview with Variety, which debuted the same day as the Invincible season 3 finale. After being asked if the character of Thragg, the primary antagonist of the comic and ruler of the Viltrumite empire, would appear in season 4, Kirkman had this to say:
"I mean, it would certainly be weird if he didn’t show up in the show. Yeah. I mean, I don’t know. It’s so tough. Here’s what I’ll say: He’s been cast and he’s amazing."
Again, it's an absolutely obnoxious way to tease fans although, to be fair, it is an absolute masterclass in leaving your audience wanting more. But then again, we already know that Robert Kirkman knows how to do that, don't we?
Oh no, I'm not talking about his writing of Invincible. I'm talking about New York Comic Con 2023.
As you may remember from Popverse's reporting all the way back then, Robert Kirkman appeared at the Amazon Studios panel hosted at the Javits Center. True to his nature, Kirkman dropped another casting bomb during the course of this discussion, which was focused on the then-in-production season 3.
"It's possible that there might be more Walking Dead alums popping up in Invincible at one point," said the writer, who originated the massive zombie franchise with an Image Comic of the same name.
Cut to the present, when we're wondering about who will play the evil Thragg in the upcoming season of Kirkman's superhero riff. Could his mysterious reference all the way back then shed light on the mystery we're wondering about now? Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, and more Walking Dead actors were onboard for Invincible since episode 1, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's surprise appearance as the character of Conquest proved that Kirkman was intentionally nosing the truth at NYCC 2023.
But does Morgan's appearance mean that Kirkman's Walking Dead tease has been fulfilled? Or can we expect other cast members to show up on the animated series, potentially even embody its worst character? We'll have to wait until Invincible season 4 (currentle without a release date) debuts to find out.
In the meantime, we'll be going back over Thragg's story in the comics and seeing which Walking Dead cast member's voice could fit the character (What's Norman Reedus up to, by the way?).
