HBO's Lanterns releases first look at the new DC Studios incarnations of Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart

Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler don't look happy to be wandering the American Heartland in the first look at the 2026 HBO series based on DC's Green Lantern

DC Studios has released the first image from the upcoming HBO series Lanterns — but if anyone expected to see John Stewart and Hal Jordan in full Green Lantern regalia with power rings glowing… you might be disappointed.

Instead, the image above — which does, indeed, feature Stewart and Jordan (Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, respectively) — shows the two Green Lanterns in regular clothes as they walk down an open road, looking somewhat unhappy about it. It’s an understated approach that reflects what showrunner and executive producer Chris Mundy says about the series: “From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion. The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

So: grounded but still Green Lantern? Looks like the first shot matches that aim — but we’ll see what things look like when the rings come out.

The official plot synopsis for the show runs as follows: “The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

The show has been co-created by Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with all three executive producing alongside Ron Schmidt, James Hawes, and DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The series, which also co-stars Kelly Macdonald, Gillet Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen, has just entered production with a 2026 release targeted.
