The cast of the latest Star Wars series to land on Disney+, The Acolyte, is full of familiar faces. One cast member whose name might not be instantly recognizable to fans is Lee Jung-jae, but we almost promise you that you’ve seen his work. Jung-jae is the star of Netflix’s most streamed show of all time, after all.
Though he has been an established star in Korea for more than 30 years, Lee Jung-jae only broke into Western media thanks to Netflix’s Squid Game. In it, he played Seong Gi-hun, the down-on-his-luck divorced father who eventually wins the obscene pot of money at the end of the show. Lee will reprise this role when Squid Game season two debuts on Netflix later this year.
Squid Game is easily Lee Jung-jae’s most famous role in the West, but he has been a huge star in Korea since 1993. Fans of K-Dramas will easily recognize him as the star of some of the biggest television shows and films of the past twenty years. In fact, his role as Gi-hun was very much him playing against type – normally he is the handsome and charismatic leading man rather than the desperate and cutthroat role he took on for Squid Game.
Lee Jung-jae’s inclusion in the cast of The Acolyte as Sol, along with its placement in an oft-neglected era of the Star Wars timeline, is part of the reason why we’re so excited to see the show debut on Disney+ . It will undoubtedly help the actor secure a more secure foothold in Western media in the coming years.
