Marvel Animation is changing Spider-Man's origin (and bringing in Dr. Strange & Venom to make it happen) in new Disney+ show

Doctor Strange and Venom are responsible for making Spidey who he is in the new Disney+ series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Get ready for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man to be a very different take on Marvel’s iconic webhead — right down to the fact that Peter Parker’s origin now includes two surprising, familiar faces… kind of.

According to footage shown at D23 Expo 2024, Peter Parker’s spider-bite that gives him his powers won’t be the result of a science experiment gone wrong, but instead come from a fight between none other than Doctor Strange and Venom, which will end up impacting both a spider… and a poor boy from Queens. (It should be noted that, while Doctor Strange is exactly as we’d expect from his previous MCU appearances, this version of Venom is notably different from any we’ve seen before.)

The shift in his origin story is just the start of what’s going to be a brand new take on the character, with Norman Osborn stepping in as his mentor in place of Tony Stark in the regular MCU, as the series continues to explore an extended “What If?” version of the character. Just how will the Green Goblin deal with that whole “with great power comes great responsibility” line, do you think…? And, if Spidey’s origin is different, will that mean that his powers might be different in the show, as well…?

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s official release date hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s expected to debut on Disney+ before the end of 2024.
