Wizards of the Coast and Netflix announced that they were collaborating on an animated series set in the expansive fantasy world of Magic: The Gathering all the way back in 2019. In the half-decade that followed, few to no updates about the series were given, though we did find out the show was set to star Arrowverse staple (and Superman himself), Brandon Routh. Now, we can reveal an update on the show, though it's hardly a positive one. According to Routh, the animated Magic: The Gathering series has been canceled.
Routh was recently in conversation with Collider. During the interview, Routh was asked about the status of the animated series, and this was the response he gave:
"I'm not sure. I did do a voice for it. As far as I understand, nobody's put out a press release about it, but apparently it's not happening."
Routh went on to say that the halted production was "kind of old news," even mentioning that he wasn't sure why the subject was coming up again.
Besides Routh's casting, announcements about the now defunct Netflix series included the fact that the Russo Brothers were originally on the creative team, though the pair left the project due to creative differences, leaving Transformers and Max Steel producer Jeff Kline to executive produce.
Neither Netflix nor Wizards of the Coast have released an official statement on Magic: The Gathering's status.
