In 2018 Netflix cancelled Daredevil, and viewers were upset. It turns out that Daredevil himself was just as upset as we were, if not more so. For Charlie Cox, Matt Murdock was the role of a lifetime, and it was hard to say goodbye. Thankfully, Marvel Studios has given him the opportunity to play the character again for the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. It feels like a romantic reunion for Charlie Cox, who wasn’t sure if he would ever play the character again.

During a spotlight panel at Fan Expo San Francisco 2024, Cox opened up about the emotional journey he went through when Daredevil was cancelled. “In 2018 when the show was cancelled, I suddenly had a breaking up period, a mourning period. We thought we were going to do a season 4, and then that didn’t happen,” Cox recalled.

“Overnight we got a phone call that was like, ‘We’re done, it’s finished.’ It was quite shocking to think I’m not going to be that character. I don’t know what the word is, but it felt like a breakup in kind of a weird way. And then like all breakups, obviously we got back together. I had a lot of questions,” Cox joked.

Although he’s playing Matt Murdock again, Cox is aware that sooner or later, this ride will end. However, he’s enjoying every minute of it.

“Now we’re making the show again, and as I said, it’s such a wonderful gift. I love it so much. But now I’m aware that there will presumably come a time when it does stop happening, and the longer it goes on, the harder it will be to let go.”

Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney+ on March 4, 2025.
