What We Do in the Shadows' Matt Berry gives dialogue advice at the Comic Con in... NeEw yOorK CitaAay
Speaking at New York Comic Con 2024's What We Do in the Shadows panel, Matt Berry describes his iconic line delivery as vampire Laszlo Cranvensworth.
Popverse was there for all four days of New York Comic Con 2024, immersing ourselves in the pop culture party full of vendors, events, and celebrities from the worlds of comics, movies, TV, gaming, and more. For a show that is full of great lines, Matt Berry's delivery in What We Do in the Shadows is almost always the standout. Maybe it's the accent, maybe it's his intonations, or maybe it's how he sounds with a toothpick in his mouth. Whatever the case, Berry's lines were a hot topic of conversation at the What We Do in the Shadows Panel at New York Comic Con 2024, and since he was in attendance, Berry gave his two cents on the matter.
"Matt," asked the panel's moderator, "You've had some absolutely incredible line readings over the life of this show, but one of them is when you're addressing Nick Kroll and you say, 'You truly are the most devious bastard in New York City.' How in the world did you come up with how you were going to say, 'New York City?'"
For those unaware, the episode he's referencing is season 4, episode 8, Go Flip Yourself. In the episode, Berry's Laszlo makes the realization that his rival and Kroll's character, Simon the Devious, has tricked him into being a pawn for a revenge plan. Laszlo reacts with the above line, spoken as only Matt Berry can speak, catapulting the episode into fandom lore and meme history. And according to Berry, he had no idea that would happen.
"It's never pre-planned," Berry began, "Every scene you're just thinking about getting to the end. And everything [you do] is to amuse yourself as well. You know, if you have to say these things more than once. So it's always a surprise to me when certain lines seem to pick up. I can't predict which ones they are. It's just a huge honor that people when people want to see it all again."
At this point, Paul Simms, the show's executive producer and one of its writers, hopped in.
"It's also that he makes us all laugh," said Simms. "And when he does that, when we're writing, we find more times for him to say, 'New York City.' We don't have to specify anything."
"Can you do it?" Simms then asked Berry, "Can you just say it?"
Ever the professional, Matt Berry obliged. And judging by the applause, NeEw yOorK CitaAay was pretty pleased.
What We Do in the Shadows season 6 began airing October 21 on FX, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.
