Marvel Studios' Ms. Marvel power visuals were directly inspired by gaming (and she was almost a Twitch streamer)

Marvel's design team drew from Kamala's gamer background for their power design

A lot goes into designing the looks and powers of the superheroes that we see on the big and little screen, and fans got to learn a little more about that process at this year's D23 Designing Marvel panel, which featured designers from Marvel Studios' visual development team.

One particular fun nugget that came up had to do with the process of designing the look of Ms. Marvel's light powers. According to Ms. Marvel's visual development supervisor Jackson Sze, a lot of those early designs came from Kamala's love of gaming.

"We drew upon Kamala's young age and her being a gamer. We tried to bring in some gaming iconography into how she would manifest her powers so a lot of platforming, so she could jump like video game characters," says Sze. "We tried bridges, and you see things that would remind people of gaming."

On the screen, Sze showed some concept art that took different aspects of gaming culture - like armor and mechs - and applied them to Kamala's superpowers. And for those who like to know about the road not taken, Sze also shared that, "For a while, [Kamala] was going to be a Twitch streamer as well."

Maybe we'll see that happen sometime in the future. We'd watch that stream!

Ms. Marvel season one is currently streaming on Disney+.
