Spring is a time of renewed life and positivity. The sun is finally out, the snow is finally melting, and the world feels just a little bit better than it did in the previous weeks. But you wouldn't know that if you were only looking at the streaming schedule for April 2025. Apparently, someone in the upper echelons of the entertainment world decided that this month would be…  well, less positive.

Which is not to say you shouldn't be excited. Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and more are bringing some superlative skullduggery to the table this month, particularly in the sci-fi, fantasy and thriller genres. but don't take my word for it, check out Popverse’s streaming guide April 2025 to see what's lurking for yourself.

Kicking off our month-long descent into darkness is Netflix, with the impactful but famously gloomy science fiction series Black Mirror. Black Mirror is returning for its 7th season, and even though it is sure to depress us with its storyline, it is certainly going to excite us with it cast of celebrities. Folks like Paul Giamatti and Cristin Milioti (hey that rhymes!) are joining the cast to warn us about the dangers of technology. And if you're more interested in dark fantasy than you are dark science fiction, tune in to the Devil May Cry anime, which debuts April 3.

And speaking of realistic suspense, you won't get more terrifying in our current historical moment than Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, based on the novel by Margaret Atwood. The Elizabeth Moss-starring dystopian drama is back for its sixth and final season on the streamer, and will debut April 8. Of all of the darkness that's coming out this month, this series may just be the most prescient.

Hacks, the massively popular, Jean Smart-starring Series that takes place in the world of stand-up comedy, will be available to stream on your own devices April 15.

Perhaps the biggest streaming release of this month, Andor comes back for season 2 on Disney+ this April 22. Considered by many to be not only the best but the most grown up Star Wars story to date, Andor’s second season will be its last, wrapping up the story of its titular character ahead of the events he was part of in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Not quite as dark, but certainly not warm and fuzzy is the John Hamm-starring Your Friends and Neighbors, which is about a wealthy neighborhood resident who, after losing his job, must turn to burglarizing his neighbors to survive. You can expect there to be at least a little bit of charm from the main character, as is expected when it comes to John Hamm, but perhaps the class commentary within the show will make it the darkest entry on this list yet? We’ll find out April 11.

The latest chapter in the law and order saga, one of TVs longest running and most well-regarded, continues the character arc of Elliot Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni. However, season 5 of the television staple will feel at least a little bit different, as it moves from its TV home on NBC to exclusively streaming on Peacock.

Last but not least, is the magical anime Witch Watch. I'm not going to lie here, folks, as someone unfamiliar with this manga-turned-anime, I was expecting a little bit of a darker outlook on the series. however after learning more about the whimsy and wonder that the manga entails, I'm starting to regret trying to work this series into the dreary and dismal theme that the rest of your streaming platforms are coming out with.

Oh well, if you really want some R-rated, bloody anime, there's always Devil May Cry.
