My Melody and Kuromi release window: Netflix brings Sanrio's beloved characters to life with stop-motion
Two of Sanrio's cutest characters will make the jump to animation with My Melody and Kuromi
Popverse's top stories of the day
- Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in the new Star Wars movie developed by Deadpool & Wolverine's Shawn Levy
- Mandalorian & Quantumania star Katy O'Brian is headed to Emerald City Comic Con 2025!
- The MCU needs Anya Taylor-Joy's Magik in it (and not just for the X-Men connection)
Netflix's stop-motion projects are solid, to say the least. Aside from the Academy Award-winning Pinnochio, the streamer has produced strong projects like Wendell & Wild, The House, and Pokémon Concierge. Given the popularity of Sanrio's My Melody and Kuromi, it's a no-brainer that Netflix would develop what could be their next animated hit.
My Melody and Kuromi, a TV series based off of the Sanrio characters, will debut sometime in July 2025. Currently, an exact release date has not been set for the series, but stay in the loop with us here at Popverse. We will have all the details once we know. In the meantime, Netflix has given us a short teaser of what the two characters will look like in the series, which you can watch below.
This is not the first time that My Melody has been in an anime series. Previously, she had her own show called Onegai My Melody which ran from 2005-2006. In total, Onegai My Melody has more than fifty episodes. The show was not stop-motion animated though.
Something that is really lovely about stop-motion animation is the sense of texture that you can see with the character models. Pokémon Concierge used this to charming effect, giving characters like Psyduck and Eevee a soft, almost wooly texture. With 2D and then 3D animation, we're so used to seeing characters look smooth that it's refreshing to see creatures look like, well, creatures.
My Melody and Kuromi will be released sometime in July 2025 on Netflix.
