Will Graham is a complex character. He’s dedicated, he’s driven, and he’s calculated. Some have theorized that he’s on the Autism spectrum, although series creator Bryan Fuller refutes that. However, Will Graham actor Hugh Dancy has heard the theories, and it helped shape the way he portrayed the character on Hannibal.
“I had played a character on the Autistic spectrum, which was related, but kind of inverse,” Dancy says during the Hannibal panel here at Emerald City Comic Con 2025. “I felt that at the beginning, when we started making the show, there was this kind of broad idea that Will was maybe on the spectrum. It was non-specific, and kind of inaccurate. Because I had already thought about it a bit, and knew about it, that helped me into thinking about him and thinking about his eye contact. Wearing glasses, and why he didn’t want to look people in the eye.”
