HBO's Harry Potter series is close to casting Shaun of the Dead's Nick Frost as Hagrid
The series has gone to great lengths to avoid involving original author J.K. Rowling due to her toxic place in the fandom in recent years.

The Harry Potter TV series from HBO has been kicking into full production mode recently, with a flurry of casting announcements about the cast. After John Lithgow was officially cast as Dumbledore, there have been reports that Nick Frost will be playing fan-favorite Hagrid in the upcoming Harry Potter series.
While many fans have understandably found it difficult to get excited about the Harry Potter series since J.K. Rowlings deep dive into anti-trans rhetoric in recent years, as evidenced by the reduced box office prospects for the last few movies, Warner Bros. still sees Harry Potter as a big name in their portfolio that can be a big draw. Adding Nick Frost, who brings a unique mixture of comedic and dramatic acting credits to the cast, is a big win for the production. Honestly, we like Frost, who is very funny and talented. It is just a bit of a shame to see him attached to this project, which will only raise Rowling's profile and ultimately result in her having more money to use to attack trans people around the world.
HBO still hasn’t officially announced that Nick Frost will play Rubeus Hagrid in the upcoming live-action Harry Potter series despite outlets like Deadline saying the deal is in the final stages of completion. Robbie Coltrane played the character in all eight of the Harry Potter films. Hagrid is a half-giant groundskeeper who looks after many of the unusual magical creatures at Hogwarts, a role that eventually becomes formalized when he is named Care of Magical Creatures professor.
No release date for the Harry Potter series from HBO has been announced. With the show still in pre-production mode, we wouldn’t expect to see it until deep into 2026 at the earliest. Nick Frost, provided his casting as Hagrid is confirmed, would join John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu in the new Harry Potter cast.
