The Outlander saga is coming to an end in two different ways.

Diane Gabaldon has been writing her historical fantasy series since the 1980s, and the author has speculated that the upcoming tenth novel might be the last one. The books have been adapted by Starz as a television drama, which is currently beginning production on its eighth and final season.

So, how does it all end?

Diana Gabaldon knows, but she isn’t telling. However, the author is willing to give us a hint. During an Outlander panel at New York City Comic Con, Gabaldon was asked about how the book and television series would end. The author had previously told actor Sam Heughan how the book would end, hoping it would help his performance as Jamie Fraiser.

“Let’s put it this way, book ten has a very much more complicated ending than the show will, which doesn’t require a lot of extracting from him [Heughan],” Gabaldon said. Heughan wasn’t spilling the beans either. “She tried to keep things very simple for me. I think she said something along the lines of ‘Don’t fuck it up,’” Heughan joked.

Hmmmm…at least we know the book and the television series will go in a different direction. A complicated ending? I suppose it will be years before we know what that means. Gabaldon is currently estimating that it could be 2026 or later when her final (?) Outlander book is published. In the meantime, Outlander season 7 part 2 premiered November 22, 2024 on Starz.
