'90s kids, unite: a new Power Rangers show is in the works at Disney+ from the Percy Jackson showrunners
Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz from Disney+'s Percy Jackson TV series have been tapped for an upcoming Power Rangers live-action show

For many of us millennials, Power Rangers were the source of core memories of the 1990s. I fondly remember having a toy Power Morpher around, and a Power Cannon which I tried to eat on at least one occasion (I don't know why, either). And while the Power Rangers have comfortably existed in the space between camp and cheesiness onscreen, that could all change with an upcoming live-action Disney+ show.
The Wrap reports that Disney+ and Hasbro Entertainment have a new Power Rangers series in the works with Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz on as writers, producers, and showrunners. Steinberg and Shotz have already showrun the solid Percy Jackson and the Olympians show on Disney+, so I feel confident in their ability to bring to life properties I obsessed over as a wee lad.
Let's hope that this time around, the Power Rangers adaptation will take cues from their excellent comics published by BOOM! Studios. BOOM!'s Power Rangers comics are plenty grown-up - there's a non-binary character called the Death Ranger who wears a badass skeleton-inspired helmet for instance. The Power Rangers comics make the case for how our Mighty Morphin friends can move beyond their campy and goopy days, and if you don't believe me, I strongly recommend checking them out.
Anyways, until we see what Steinberg and Shotz come up with, I'll be sitting here hoping that the next iteration of the Power Rangers onscreen will have a character as charismatic as RJ Cyler's Billy Cranston from the 2017 movie.
