Even before Daredevil: Born Again debuts, Marvel Studios begins work on a Punisher spin-off

Daredevil isn’t the only Netflix show that Marvel Studios is reviving, with news emerging that Marvel is spinning off a standalone Punisher special from the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series, aimed at a 2026 debut on Disney+.

The Hollywood Reporter has the story that Jon Bernthal will not only star but also co-write a one-off special episode centering around Frank Castle that will accompany the second season of Born Again next year; he’ll be co-writing with Reinaldo Marcus Green, who will also direct the episode. It’s unknown whether or not the episode will connect with the second season of Born Again on a story level, although Castle will return in the show’s first season (and has, in fact, already shown up in trailers for the season).

The Punisher revival marks the second show revived by Marvel Studios for Disney+ from the Marvel/Netflix co-productions of the mid-2010s; other shows in that cycle included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. There had been some confusion over whether or not those shows were considered canonical to the central MCU timeline, although a final decision was seemingly made to include them in early 2024, following Marvel’s mid-2023 decision to pause production on Daredevil: Born Again in order to rework and rewrite the series.

Whether or not this means fans should expect good news surrounding Jessica Jones and Luke Cage revivals is entirely up in the air, although it’s worth noting that rumors surrounding Krysten Ritter’s return as Jones in Born Again have been circulating for quite some time. Wishful thinking or a sign of things to come…? Keep reading Popverse to find out.
