Red Dead Redemption is a phenomenal video game series, but would it work as a television show?
Games like The Last of Us and The Witcher have become popular television shows, so it’s only natural to wonder if Rockstar’s western drama will be next. However, not everyone is sold on the idea.
Roger Clark is an actor who portrayed Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2. The actor recently appeared at Florida Supercon, where he participated in a Red Dead Redemption panel. During the discussion, he was asked about the possibility of a Red Dead television series. Clark didn’t hold back.
"I say Danny DeVito as Arthur, are we right,” Clark joked.
Clark said he was reluctant about any potential RDR series because of the way HBO handled Last of Us.
“That's a very loaded question. It used to wind me up a couple of years ago because Troy [Baker] doesn't look like Joel. I totally understand that he wasn't cast as it, and the same with Ashley [Johnson], she's not the same age. There's so many of these adaptations that we're starting to see now. One thing that I think is a real shame is that the original cast doesn't get a look in.”
While the roles of Joel and Ellie were recast for television, Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker were offered smaller roles in the series. Clark isn’t sure if he would take the same deal.
“There’s a reason why we love these characters as much as we do. As soon as there's talk of converting it to film or TV, they just couldn't care less. Nobody's getting auditions. I think Troy did an awesome job in Last of Us, same as Ashley. Same with lots of other cast members that they returned to as well. I always thought I would love to have a go at Arthur, if they threw me a smaller bone, I might not take it. I'm not sure I would take it.”
However, Clark ultimately feels a Red Dead television series is unlikely.
“I'm getting a little older now, I'm not sure I couldn't do Arthur. I'm a little old now. So, if they don't do something soon, I think it's unrealistic. But I don't see it happening. The whole time I worked at Rockstar, they always said the same thing. They say, 'We don't make TV shows, we make video games.' And they stuck to that so far. If it did become an adaption, I think it would be hard to cram that whole story into two or three hours though, so maybe television will be better.”
Would Red Dead Redemption work as a television show? If it did, would you keep Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan, or recast the part? Give your thoughts in the comments section…
