Evil Morty made his voice actor Harry Belden feel "spoiled" with the Rick & Morty role
After being teased for years, Evil Morty finally played a larger role in Rick and Morty season 7, played by Harry Belden. But will he be back for season 8?

There are some terrifying villains in Rick and Morty, but perhaps the most terrifying of all is the one that most resembles one of its heroes. That's Evil Morty, the despicable alternate version of the Morty we've come to know and love, first teased all the way back in season 1, episode 10. At a recent event celebrating the series, the actor responsible for bringing Evil Morty to life spoke about his experience with the character... and even touched on if we'll see him in the upcoming season 8.
Some context: about 15 minutes into the Rick and Morty panel at LA Comic Con 2024, which featured voice actors Spencer Grammer, Ian Cardoni, and Harry Belden, the subject of the long-teased Rick and Morty villain made its way into the conversation, eliciting a lot of excitement from the cast.
"I love Evil Morty!" exclaimed Grammer, who plays Summer in the series, "He's got a great theme song."
"And a great eye patch," said Cardoni, who plays Rick.
But of course, it was Harry Belden, who plays Evil Morty and his mainline, good counterpart, who had the most to say about the villain.
"I was so stoked when I saw that I was going to get to play Evil Morty," Belden recounted, "And in my first season doing it! I was like, 'What? This is great!' And yeah, what a great episode."
The episode Belden's talking about, by the way, is Unmortricken, or episode 5 of season 7. It explores the nightmarish backstory of Evil Morty but was, according to Belden, a dream to record.
"I felt so spoiled that we got to dive right in and do this crazy episode," he explains, "And I was like, 'This is in the middle of the season?' I couldn't believe that. So it was great, it was fantastic. I had so much fun doing it. It was my favorite episode to record by far."
Of course, bringing up Evil Morty's past necessitates a question about his future, which the panel's moderator was only too happy to ask about. Will Evil Morty appear in season 8?
"I can't say anything about season 8," Belden said, disappearing a red sniper's dot from his forehead, "but if you look at it logically, you know he's got all this power now. He's the one in charge; what couldn't that lead to? I don't know, maybe he'll be happy being able to finally retire now. Now that he truly doesn't have anything to worry about. It seemed like that's what he wanted, so... Who knows, right? He could; he could not. You never know, and that's the fun part."
It's not exactly a forthcoming answer but, at the same time, Belden also avoided pissing off a lot of spoiler-averse fans. I think it's safe to say, though, that the idea of Evil Morty retiring is less-than-true. Whether or not he appears in season 8, I'd be willing to bet Evil Morty is to continue to be a threat in whatever future exists for the show.
Rick and Morty season 8 is expected sometime in 2025.
