Roswell star Majandra Delfino says she was "blacklisted" from Hollywood for lying about her age, but then was "forgiven"

Majandra Delfino jokes that the Roswell producers blacklisted her for lying about her age

Majandra Delfino wanted to be on Roswell so badly that she was willing to break child labor laws.

Teen dramas typically cast actors in their twenties to portray high school students in order to make production easier. Minors are required to work shorter hours, have a teacher on set, and adhere to a series of regulations.

That doesn’t mean teen dramas won’t cast actual teenagers, but in many cases, they’ll opt for a young adult, particularly for important roles such as the series lead.

That’s why Majandra Delfino lied about her age when she auditioned for Roswell in 1999. The actress had her sights set on series lead Liz Parker, and she knew she had a better shot at the role if she was over 18.

“I auditioned for Liz, I think twice,” Delfino says during the Roswell reunion panel from Seattle's ECCC 2025. “That was it. And then I got blacklisted for a little bit, and then I was invited back into the industry, because I said I was an adult. But I wasn’t. I was 17. So, then they forgave me, and by then Liz was cast. Everything was cast, so I got to play Maria.”

Although Delfino lost out on playing Liz, she was given the role of Maria DeLuca, one of the most important characters in the series. It probably helped that she turned 18 before the pilot premiered during the fall 1999 television season.
