Netflix's Sandman season 2 will break from the comic to focus more soley on Dream, says showrunner Allen Heinberg

The Sandman comic was an ensemble piece with Dream at the center - but the show will be squarely about Dream going forward.

DC's The Sandman is a sprawling beautiful mess of a comic. Over its 75 issues (and subsequent spin-offs and prequels), it introduced and focused on a number of characters with Dream and his siblings in the Endless being a major part of that - but not always the star(s). But according to Netflix's Sandman showrunner Allen Heinberg, they're very aware of that - and consciously changing that for their live-action show.

"The Sandman, as a comic book, is a sort of anthology that has a core narrative at its center. Our show really is about the story of Dream," Heinberg says in a promotional video for the series by Netflix. "And so, every decision that we've made story-wise in season 2 has been to follow Dream's story through Sandman."

That doesn't necessarily mean the rest of the cast is dismissed - as season 2 will feature the first scene of the entire Endless family in one scene - but more firmly places this as a show about Dream that the other characters interact with than the comic was.

"We are constantly learning on this show and trying to bring the comic to life in a way that is faithful and yet has its own unique spin," Heinberg adds.

The Sandman season 2 has been confirmed to debut sometime this year.
