It’s a familiar story: a cult show with a mysterious premise captures the attention of the world, only for fans and critics to come to realize that no-one involved with the show knows exactly what the mystery at the heart of the series actually means. Call it ‘the Lost problem,’ or perhaps ‘the Battlestar Galactica problem.’ Hell, if you’ve got a long enough memory, you could even call it ‘the X-Files problem.’ There’s some good news for fans of Apple TV+’s Severance, however; series co-creator Ben Stiller says that he knows what the end of the show looks like… and how they’re going to get there.
Talking to the New York Times in advance of the premiere of the show’s second season, Stiller said, “We have the end,” although he went on to say that it’d be a spoiler to share anything about it. “We definitely have an end. I think we now know exactly how many seasons, which I won’t say,” he added, going on to tease, “I mean, in my mind, the series has always been about Mark and his innie and his outie, and the ultimate destination for both of them.”
The ultimate destination? Is that… death? (Well, that or running Lumon Industries. One or the other.)
In a separate interview, Stiller has said that “we’re starting up our season 3 work,” confirming for the first time that a third season is already in the offing — and, thankfully, won’t take three years to make it to the screen, as was the case with the second season. Of course, now the question is, is the third season also going to be the last one…?
Severance season 2 begins January 17 on Apple TV+.
