Star Trek: Lower Decks showrunner reveals the riffing on the show “is fake" (and the cast admits, that’s a good thing)
During the Star Trek Universe panel at NYCC 2024, the cast and creator address riffing on Lower Decks, admitting that it is all an act.

If you’ve ever seen an episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks, one thing you’ve surely noticed is the amazing chemistry among the cast. These actors can quip quicker than Tribbles procreate. Their rapid fire dialogue is one of the things that makes the animated series stand out among the multiple Star Trek films and shows over the years. To get that kind of chemistry, they must be recording in the same room, right?
Not so! During the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con, Lower Decks creator Mike McMahon revealed the shocking fact that the four members of the cast who were there with him — Tawny Newsome (Mariner), Jack Quaid (Boimler), Eugene Cordero (Rutherford) and Noël Wells (Tendi) — had actually never been all together in the same room before, ever. “This is the first time the four have been together in the entire run of the show.”
This led someone during the Q&A to wonder, if they’re never recording together, how exactly the cast accomplishes its superior-quality riffing. “You’re looking at all the riffing we get to do,” Newsome said. “On the show, the riffing is fake,” McMahon confirmed. “The riffing is real here.” And uncannily, their real-life riffing seemed to perfectly mirror the show.
“The reason why we can’t record together is we won’t get anything done,” Cordero explained, a fact that Newsome and McMahon seemed to confirm at the beginning of the panel when they began arguing about Stardates. “I think our panel was too normal,” Newsome said after the exchange, “It needed to get weird and uncomfortable.” Quaid then pointed out they had actually only just begun.
